“Used”, “refurbished”, “open box” and “like new” get thrown around a lot. They are not the same, and the difference matters for what you get and what happens if something goes wrong.
Used
A used laptop is sold as it was when the previous owner let it go. It may or may not have been tested, the battery may be tired, and there is often no warranty beyond what the law requires. Prices are low, but so is the information you get.
Refurbished
A refurbished laptop has been checked, cleaned, repaired where needed and reset before sale. Done properly, that means a full function test, a data wipe, a battery check and an honest description of how it looks. “Refurbished” only means something if the seller tells you exactly what they checked. At Laptop Sharks that is the test report on every listing.
Open box
Open box usually means a new laptop whose box has been opened: a return, a display unit or one that was unboxed and never really used. It should look and work like new.
Brand new
Unused, in its original packaging. We sell some brand-new laptops below retail price too.
What to ask any seller
- What exactly was tested, and can I see the results for this unit?
- What is the battery health and cycle count?
- Are the photos of this unit, or stock photos?
- How long is the warranty, and does it cover the battery?
- Can I return it if I change my mind?
Our answers: a full test report on every listing, battery health and cycles published, real photos of the unit, a 12-month warranty that covers the battery, and 14-day returns.
